POLICE IN PURSUIT

POLICE IN PURSUIT - SUMMERLAND WAY FROM GURRANANG TO LEEVILLE

Police In Pursuit 01A high speed pursuit northbound along Summerland Way from Gurrangang (north of Grafton) ending in Leeville (south of Casino) in the early hours of this morning from 3:45am saw speeds of up to 170 kilometres per hour reached by a white Hyundai Elantra similar to the one pictured. There appeared to be four persons reported on board.

The vehicle was reported stolen.

Grafton highway police engaged the vehicle in a pursuit after it failed to stop for a random breath test and it had no tail lights. Casino police with road spikes made their way to intercept the pursuit from the north.

The lead pursuit vehicle reported that the vehicle of interest was throwing items thought to be an amount of drugs from the passenger side of the vehicle. A second Grafton highway police vehicle was coming from behind and acknowledged the report.

Casino police were given permission to use spikes as the pursuit approached the 75km marker south of Casino. The speed was 150 kilometres per hour. Casino police were looking to set up just past the Rappville Bridge.

The speed of the vehicle of interest was reported as 170/100 as it approached the 60km marker south of Casino. Items were still being thrown out of the vehicle.

Casino police pulled up short stopping at Branch Creek near Amarina Road to set up spikes as the pursuit was approaching very quickly. A large pink bag was reportedly thrown out of the vehicle as the pursuit passed the 50km marker coming through Whiporie.

Speed was 140/100 passing Old Tenterfield Road.

The vehicle was driving within its lane at 150/100 as it passed the 35km marker.

Highway police were still pursuing under full lights and sirens as the pursuit passed the Rappville turnoff and approached the road spike location. Communications were lost for a short period as they went out of range prior to switching to an alternate frequency where they passed the 20km marker.

It appears a successful spiking was the result taking out the right rear tyre of the vehicle of interest.

Police advised they were just about to engage the persons on board in a foot pursuit when the vehicle of interest stopped.

A short time later police advised they had one person in custody about 100 metres north of Ryans Road on Summerland Way. Others were still outstanding.

The tailing Grafton highway vehicle advised they had only found items of clothing on the road. The pink bag had not yet been located.

Police advised a person was in custody and it only appeared to be that one other was outstanding.

A tow was arranged for the vehicle of interest to take it back to the police station. The pink bag, a backpack, was also located but there was nothing in it.

Police transported at least one person back to Casino.
