CORAKI PURSUIT

What would normally be a sleepy Sunday morning in the quiet Northern NSW town of Coraki was rudely interrupted by some young people in a Holden Commodore sedan running amok at the Box Ridge Mission yesterday, Sunday, 8 November 2015.

Police received a report at 8:52am about a young male who had reportedly stolen a car from Lismore and was doing burnouts and driving crazily behind a house at the Box Ridge Mission.

The vehicle, described as a light blue Holden Commodore sedan, was reportedly being driven by a person of interest who was getting other young people to get on top while he did burnouts with them still on. The driver was known to the informant and described as 14 or 15 years old.

Police acknowledged the report almost immediately.

32 minutes later, at 9:24am, a police alpha unit (officer working alone) called off at the Box Ridge Mission.

At 9:35am, the police alpha unit reported he was unable to locate the vehicle of interest after some searching.

At 9:40am, a nearby highway patrol vehicle enquired about the vehicle of interest.

At 9:42am, the vehicle was sighted and took off from the alpha unit. A pursuit was initiated.

Starting in a laneway, the vehicle, now described as a silver Holden Commodore with registration provided, travelled north along Autumn Street before turning right into Union Street. The vehicle of interest continued along Adam Street east bound.

The nearby highway patrol vehicle was moving to intercept the pursuit.

The alpha unit terminated the pursuit a short time later due to being a low category vehicle not suitable for pursuits. The vehicle of interest was last seen heading towards Woodburn along East Coraki Road (Swan Bay Road).

A highway vehicle was nearby and swinging back up to intercept the vehicle.

The alpha unit advised the vehicle of interest, now confirmed outstanding, reportedly collided with a parked vehicle in Queen Elizabeth Drive.

The alpha unit, still seemingly following the vehicle of interest after terminating the pursuit, advised the vehicle of interest had turned left into Tuckurimba Road heading towards Lismore and Wyrallah Road.

Available Lismore cars were being sought. The highway vehicle trying to catch up with the vehicle of interest was trying to arrange road spikes ahead of it.

With spikes coming from Lismore police station, it was suggested to try using them near the Lismore City Council waste facility. Information was also received about two possible persons on board the vehicle of interest. Police were also moving to cover alternate routes with road spikes also coming from Casino.

Police suggested the vehicle may have turned down Leslies Lane if they were back tracking just as a very experienced category one highway patrol vehicle spotted the vehicle passing it in the opposite direction. He turned on it to engage it in a pursuit heading towards Lismore.

The pursuit was initiated and passed Tucki Road where it was reported the vehicle of interest had a fair bit of damage to the rear as if it had backed into something. Speed increased to about 140/80.

Speed decreased to 100/80 passing the Wyrallah Chapel. A bit of smoke was reportedly coming from the vehicle and two heads were sighted on board. Traffic was reported as light and conditions clear.

Speed increased to 125/80 coming into the township of Wyrallah.

Police ahead advised they had road spikes set up at Wyrallah Road and Durheim Road.

It appeared the vehicle of interest crashed along Wyrallah Road just south of Wyrallah Ferry Road. Police were heading there to assist. An ambulance was called just in case as communication was lost for some time with the lead pursuit vehicle who was a highway patrol officer alpha unit.

Communications were an issue with the officer managing to call a supervisor using his mobile phone advising he had one in custody and he required assistance before his phone dropped out. Assistance was coming from all directions.

Backup arrived moments later. One person of interest was on foot through paddocks. Police were heading around to intercept. A dog unit was requested.

Police then advised that the outstanding person of interest stopped in the middle of the paddock, put his hands on his head and began walking towards highway patrol vehicles. The second person of interest was secured a short time later.

An ambulance was requested for the two persons of interest regarding minor injuries to the eye and mouth. No police officers were reported injured.

A tow truck was arranged for the vehicle of interest at 10:00am.
